Abstract The use of asymmetrical disc tools for the mining hard and very rocks is a promising direction developing mechanical methods. A significant obstacle in methods with asymmetric lack adequate computational deep understanding rock–tool interaction can develop industrial applications significantly. fundamental problem designing work systems analytical models to identify tool loads during process. Evaluation of Disc Cutter Performance in Rock Cutting Process Using 3D Finite Element Method

Today, numerical simulation can be used as a suitable tool to measure large quantities that are very expensive and, in some cases, impossible to measure. One of the important issues in predicting rock mass boreability in excavation with full face tunnel boring machines is estimating the discchr('39')s forces for rock cutting. For this purpose, the linear cutting test is  employed. However, limi...

Rock Slope Stability Analysis Using Discrete Element Method

Rock slope stability depends very much on the strength features of the rock and the geometrical and strength characteristics of the discontinuities (e.g., roughness, wall strength and persistence). Since a rock mass is not a continuum, its behavior is dominated by such discontinuities as faults, joints and bedding planes. Also, Rock slope instability is a major hazard for human activities and o...

A Study of the Wave Propagation Velocity in Granular Soils Using Discrete Element Method (DEM)

In the present paper, discrete element method (DEM) is used to study wave propagation phenomenon in granular soils. The effect of factors such as coefficient of friction, frequency, normal stiffness and soil gradation on the wave velocity is studied. Using the wall motion based on the sinusoidal function is the method of loading used in this simulation, through which the pressure wave is transf...

Design and Optimization of Tunnel Boring Machines by Simulating the Cutting Rock Process using the Discrete Element Method

Nowadays there is a large number of tunneling projects in progress, mainly in Europe, both for roads and transport supplies. Performance prediction of tunnel boring machines (TBM) and the determination of some design parameters have become crucial, as they are critical elements in planning a project of mechanical excavation. In this paper we use the Discrete Element Method (DEM) to build models...
